What is a four column sorting task?

A four column sorting task is a hands-on learning activity that asks students to sort objects or items into four groups.

Four column sorting tasks can address a variety of skills such as:

Sorting by color

Students sort objects by color

Sorting objects from whole to part, or part to whole

Students sort pieces/parts into the whole group

Sorting objects by type or category

Students sort objects by category

Four column sorting tasks are appropriate for special education students, preschool students or any student who is a hands-on learner and working on these types of cognitive skills.
